Why Can't I Download TikTok Videos?

When downloads fail, there is usually a specific reason. Here are the seven most common reasons why you cannot download a TikTok video — and what to do about each one.

Reason 1: The video is private

When a TikTok account is set to private, all of their videos are only visible to approved followers. No downloader — including TikItDown — can access the source file for a private video. There is no workaround for this.

Solution: The video must be made public by the creator. You can follow the account and wait for them to change their privacy settings.

Reason 2: The video was deleted

Creators can delete their videos at any time. Once a video is deleted, the source file is removed from TikTok's servers. The URL may still show in your history, but the content is gone.

Solution: Check if the video still plays on TikTok. If it does not, it has been deleted and cannot be downloaded.

Reason 3: The video is geo-blocked

Some TikTok content is restricted to specific countries or regions. If you are outside the allowed region, the video may not load on TikTok — and therefore cannot be downloaded.

Solution: Try using a different network. If you are traveling, the video may be available when you return to the original region.

Reason 4: The URL is incorrect

TikTok URLs can look different depending on where you copy them from. If you pasted a truncated link, share text instead of a URL, or a link with extra parameters, the downloader may not recognize it.

Solution: Go back to TikTok, find the video, and copy a fresh link. The URL should start with https://www.tiktok.com/ or https://vm.tiktok.com/.

Reason 5: Browser or device issues

Content blockers, outdated browsers, cached data, and interfering extensions can all prevent downloads from working. Low storage space on your device can also cause downloads to fail silently.

Solution: Try incognito mode, disable extensions, clear your cache, or switch to a different browser. Check your device storage.

Reason 6: Network problems

An unstable internet connection, VPN, or proxy can interrupt the download process. Some networks also block access to certain file types or domains.

Solution: Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data. Disable VPN or proxy temporarily. Try a different network entirely.

Reason 7: Server-side issues

Rarely, TikTok's servers may be slow or temporarily unavailable. When this happens, downloads may time out or fail even though everything on your end is correct.

Solution: Wait a few minutes and try again. Server issues are temporary.

Quick diagnostic checklist

  1. Does the video still play on TikTok? If not, it is deleted or private.
  2. Is the URL in the correct format? Copy a fresh link from TikTok.
  3. Try incognito mode — does the download work there?
  4. Try a different browser — does it work?
  5. Check your network — are other sites loading normally?
  6. Wait five minutes and try again — could be a server issue.
